📖Results of the WCPL’s Summer Reading Program

A whopping 1,397,829 minutes were read and logged in Beanstack this past summer. That is more than double the number of logged minutes from the summer of 2020. The number of minutes are the total amount across all age groups (children, teen, and adult) and all six locations of Williamson County Public Library. We are proud of all or our patrons – reaching that million minutes mark was a tremendous success. We also almost doubled the number of registered participants.

Our program this year began June 1 and ended on August 7, 2021.

We started using the online tool Beanstack to track progress, offer challenges, activities, badges, and rewards. Next summer we plan to add a paper logging option in addition to the online version. We will also be opening registration for the 2022 Summer Reading Program on May 19, before summer activities began and focus on making registration a family event rather than just a children’s activity.

Be on the lookout for information on our Winter Reading Program – it begins on December 1, 2021 and will end on February 2, 2022.

Be happy – read a book!

Sharon Reily

Honey bees are our most important pollinator of food crops. An estimated one third of our food relies on pollination mainly by bees, but also by other insects, birds and bats. To learn how to attract bees and other pollinators to your garden, register for our next Garden Talk virtual program, “The Bee Friendly Garden,” to be presented this Monday, August 9 at 1:00. The Williamson County Master Gardeners will share their expertise on creating pollinator-friendly landscapes and offer suggestions for plants that will help feed the bees and also supply great flower cuttings for your home.

To supplement the bee-friendly advice from our Master Gardeners, the Library offers some great print and electronic resources.

Understanding Hospice Care: A Virtual Q and A with Amy Seay, RN

What is Hospice? Who is it for? How do I access those services? What should I expect?

These are just a few of the common questions that will be addressed in the upcoming program Understanding Hospice, a Virtual Q & A with Amy Seay, RN. End of life care can be a challenging and distressing time for patients and caregivers. This program will hopefully help you gain some clarity on options and expectations that come with hospice services.  Amy Seay is a registered nurse who has served the Middle Tennessee area providing hospice care for 4 years. Her experience, compassion, and knowledge make her a valuable sounding board for people and their caregivers making difficult decisions about end of life care.

Adult-Crafty Video: Patriotic Luminary

We have a new Crafty-Adult Virtual craft tutorial available on the Williamson County Public Library Programs Playlist on the Williamson County TV (WCTV) channel on YouTube.

Put a few mason jars or candle holders to work this Fourth of July as table décor for picnics or parties. Simply use rice and food coloring to make the red and blue colors and layer it in your container. Watch the video for step-by-step directions.

There are a few cautions with this craft: this idea was discovered on Pinterest, but the directions were vague about measurements and timing. With our video you will find specifics in the step-by-step video made to walk you through it. This craft does not take a long time, maybe four to five hours – the majority of that time is for the rice to thoroughly dry. It also has the potential to be messy, so young children should be supervised.

While the goal was to find a craft specifically for the upcoming July 4th holiday, but with a change of rice colors (orange & black, green & red, etc.) it can be adapted to any occasion.

Safe celebrations! 🎉 🎉 🎉
